Most people shop for Christmas string lights by color and length. The choice that decides whether you are happy with them in week three is something else: how they are powered.
A battery set can hang on a bookshelf with no socket nearby, and it will also need new batteries before New Year. A plug-in curtain fills a window with light and ties you to an outlet. A solar string lights the garden for free, as long as it gets sun. Each type solves one problem and creates another, so it helps to decide where the lights will live first.
This guide compares the four power types, using the details stated in the product listings in our store. Where a listing is vague or contradicts itself, we say so, because that is the moment to check before you buy.

The short version
Pick by where the lights will go
- Indoors, no socket nearby: battery or USB. Good for shelves, windows, wreaths and door frames.
- Indoors, big and bright: plug-in. Curtain lights and net lights cover the most area.
- Garden, path or porch with no outdoor socket: solar, if the spot gets daylight.
- Christmas tree: plug-in tree sets are made for the job; battery and USB strings suit small tabletop trees.
- Always check the listing for the plug or voltage option that matches your country before ordering. We offer free shipping, and estimated delivery is 7–10 business days after processing (see our Shipping Policy).
Battery vs USB vs solar vs plug-in at a glance
| Power type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | Anywhere without a socket: shelves, wreaths, windows, tabletop displays | Batteries run down and are sometimes not included in the box |
| USB | Desks, bedrooms and shelves near a port, adapter or power bank | The cable length limits where the lights can go |
| Solar | Gardens, paths, fences and porches with daylight | Less charge on short or cloudy winter days; needs a sunny spot for the panel |
| Plug-in (mains) | Big displays: curtains, nets, full trees | Needs an outlet, and the plug or voltage must match your country |
The rest of this guide takes each type in turn, with real examples from the store. If you are decorating a rental and want ideas that need no nails at all, our guide to renter-friendly Christmas decorations covers that side of the question.
Battery-powered Christmas lights
Battery lights are the most flexible option. With no cable to hide, you can drape them across a mantel-less shelf, wind them around a wreath or stick them to a window. The trade-off is upkeep: someone has to swap the batteries, and the more lights you run, the more often that happens.
Two things worth checking on any battery listing: the battery type (AA, AAA and coin cells are not interchangeable) and whether batteries are included. Some listings, such as the fairy lights further down, say they are not.

Battery or USB
Christmas LED Light String (Santa, Elk and Snowman)
A string of festive character lights that comes in both battery and USB versions, so you can choose the power source that suits the spot.
- Options: 1.5 m with 10 lamps (battery), 3 m with 20 lamps (battery) or 3 m with 20 lamps (USB)
- Figures about 4.5 cm; shapes include Santa Claus, deer, snowman, bell, tree, socks and gloves
- Listed rating IP42, so keep it indoors or under cover

Battery
Christmas LED Suction Cup Window Lights
Battery lights that stick to the glass with suction cups, so the window becomes the decoration.
- Battery powered with a manual switch
- Listed as 10 LED beads, warm 3000K light, IP44
- Suction cups need smooth surfaces such as windows and walls
- 11 shapes, including angel, bell, tree, deer, heart, moon, Santa, snowflake, snowman and stars
The same listing does not give a length in a unit we can quote, so check the product page for the size you need before ordering.
USB-powered Christmas lights
USB lights sit between battery and plug-in. You do not need a wall outlet, but you do need a USB port, a phone charger or a power bank within cable reach. That makes them a natural fit for a desk, a bedside table or a bookcase near a charging station, and it removes the battery-swapping chore. If you already run a power bank for other things, our guide to choosing a power bank for heated clothing explains what to look for.
Two products in the store offer a USB option. The Santa, elk and snowman string above has a 3 m, 20-lamp USB version. The copper-wire fairy lights below list battery and USB power together, which is handy if you want to test both.

Battery or USB
Copper-Wire LED Fairy Lights (2 m, 5 m or 10 m)
Fine copper wire with small LEDs that can be wrapped around a wreath, a jar, a mirror frame or a shelf edge.
- Lengths of 2 m, 5 m or 10 m, with 20, 50 or 100 LEDs
- Power options listed: AA battery, USB or CR2032 (batteries not included)
- Steady mode, in several colors
- Read before you buy: the listing calls it an outdoor and indoor light but also says to keep it away from dampness, rain and mist. We would treat it as an indoor or covered light
Solar Christmas lights
Solar lights are the practical answer for a garden, a path or a fence when there is no outdoor socket. A small panel charges a battery in the daytime and the lights come on at night.
The catch is winter itself. Listings quote charge and run times that assume good sunlight, and December days are short and often overcast. Expect the panel to need a clear, sunny spot, and do not judge a solar set by how it behaves in the shade of a wall.

Solar
Solar LED Garden String Lights
A solar string with a ground stake for the panel, made for garden fences, shrubs and railings.
- Two modes: steady on and flashing
- Listed charging time 6–8 hours of sunlight; about 8–12 hours of light when fully charged
- Sizes: 5 m with 20 lights, 7 m with 50, 12 m with 100 or 22 m with 200
- Listed rating IP44

Solar
Solar Christmas Tree Path Lights
Small light-up trees on ground stakes, made to line a path or flank a doorstep.
- Listed rating IP65, with two lighting modes
- Light sensor switches on at dusk, with a memory function
- About 8–12 hours of light when fully charged; overall size 70 cm

Plug-in Christmas lights
If you want the biggest effect, mains-powered lights are the answer. They are the ones that fill a window, wrap a tree or cover a wall, and they do not fade when batteries run down. The costs are an outlet and, in some cases, a plug that does not match the one you have.
Check the plug or voltage before you add to cart. Several of these listings come in separate versions (for example US 110V, EU 220V, UK or AU). They are not interchangeable, so pick the one that matches your country.

Plug-in
Christmas LED Curtain Lights
A wall of light for a window or a blank wall. The most dramatic option for a small space.
- 3 m x 3 m, 16 strips of 19 beads (304 beads in total)
- Plug-in with a remote to change modes; US 110V or EU 220V
- The listing says several sets can be connected, but gives no maximum, so ask before chaining a lot of them
- Keep the controller and transformer away from water and rain

Plug-in
Fishnet Star Lights
A net of LEDs that can be draped over a wall or a large surface far faster than a single string.
- Sizes: 1.5 m x 1.5 m with 96 LEDs, 3 m x 2 m with 192 LEDs, or 6 m x 4 m with 672 LEDs
- Listed as warm 2700K, rated IP44 (splash-resistant, not for heavy rain)
- US plug or EU 220V
For the tree itself, tree light sets have their own layout: a set of wires meant to run down the tree from the top, so you skip the winding.

Plug-in
Christmas Tree LED Light Wires (64 LEDs)
Eight wires of eight LEDs each, made to hang from the top of the tree and fan out.
- 64 LEDs as 8 wires of 1.5 m each
- Versions for US, EU or UK plugs, in sets of 2 or 3 (check the listing for the exact options)
- A separate AU converter is offered on the listing
A similar option is the 64-light dazzler tree set, which the listing describes as 64 LEDs on 1.8 m wires, IP44, dimmable and controlled by a handheld button controller, with AU, EU, UK and US models.

How much length or how many LEDs do you need?
String lights are sold by length and by LED count, and both matter. Length tells you what you can wrap; LED count tells you how dense the glow will be. Rather than quoting rules of thumb we cannot back up, here is a simple way to size for yourself:
- Measure first. Use string or a tape to trace the path the lights will take: along a shelf, around a window frame, down a fence.
- Add a little. Wrapping around a wreath or a branch uses more length than the straight line suggests.
- Check where the cable ends. On plug-in and USB lights the lead-in wire matters as much as the lit part; the plug has to reach the outlet.
- Match the product option. Many of the products here sell several lengths (for example 2 m, 5 m and 10 m); choose the variant, not just the product.
Checklist before you order
- Where will the lights go: indoors, covered outdoors or fully exposed?
- Is there a socket, a USB port or neither?
- What is the listed water rating (IP number), and does it match where you will hang them? IP44 means protected against splashing water and IP65 against water jets, so treat lower-rated lights (such as IP42 or IP44) as indoor or well-sheltered use.
- Are batteries included? Which type?
- Does the plug or voltage match your country?
- Have you selected the right length, color and power version on the product page?
Common questions
Are battery or plug-in Christmas lights better?
Neither is better in general. Battery lights go anywhere but need fresh batteries. Plug-in lights are usually the choice for big displays such as curtains and tree sets, but need a socket and the correct plug for your country.
Can I use USB Christmas lights with a power bank?
Usually yes, since a USB set only needs a USB power source. Check the listing for the input rating, and note that some power banks switch off when the draw is very low. If yours does, try another one.
Do solar Christmas lights work in winter?
They can, but short and cloudy days mean less charge than the figures on a listing, which assume sunlight. Give the panel a clear, sunny spot for best results.
Can I use outdoor Christmas lights indoors?
Yes, in general. The reverse is the risk: indoor lights outside. Check the IP rating on the listing and, when a listing says both “outdoor” and “keep away from rain”, treat it as covered-only use.
Will plug-in lights from your store work in my country?
Many listings offer a US, EU, UK or AU version. Pick the version that matches your outlets; the versions are not interchangeable.
How do I stop lights from tangling in storage?
Wind them around a piece of cardboard or a spool and keep them in their original box. It takes two minutes and saves the January struggle.
